Often referred to as "The King" (O Rei) in his native Brazil, Roberto Carlos is more than just a singer; he is a living legend whose career spans over six decades. For international readers, even if his name isn't immediately familiar, his influence on romantic music across Latin America and the world is undeniable.

Born in 1941 in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Espírito Santo, Roberto Carlos Braga started his musical journey initially inspired by Elvis Presley and the emerging rock and roll scene. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s and his big break came in the mid-1960s as a leader of the "Jovem Guarda" (Youth Guard) movement.

Alongside his longtime friend and songwriting partner, Erasmo Carlos (often called "The Tremendous"), Roberto Carlos popularized a Brazilian version of rock, pop, and soul. They also hosted a hugely successful TV show of the same name, cementing Roberto's image as a youth idol.

As the 1970s arrived, Roberto Carlos shifted his focus from the upbeat rock of the Jovem Guarda to the romantic ballads that would define the rest of his career. It is this period that truly established him as "The King." His songs, usually written with Erasmo Carlos, spoke directly to the heart, covering themes of love, faith, friendship, and spirituality. His rich, smooth voice and emotional delivery made his annual album releases a national event, often dominating the charts for the entire year.

While his discography is extensive, several hits resonate deeply across generations and borders:

  • "Detalhes" (Details): A quintessential romantic ballad about remembering a past love through small, everyday details.

  • "Como É Grande O Meu Amor Por Você" (How Great Is My Love For You): A powerful declaration of eternal love.

  • "Jesus Cristo": A gospel-inspired song that showcases his deep Catholic faith.

  • "Lady Laura": A tribute to his mother that became one of his most personal and beloved songs.

Roberto is also famous for recording his albums in Spanish, Italian, and English, allowing his music to spread throughout Spanish-speaking Latin America and Europe. His success earned him numerous accolades, including a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Performance in 1989 and the prestigious Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year award in 2015 at the Latin Grammys, celebrating his artistic achievements and humanitarian efforts.

Internationally, he has performed and collaborated with figures like Jennifer Lopez, Alejandro Sanz, Marco Antonio Solis and Andrea Bocelli. His songs have been covered by artists such as Julio Iglesias, Ray Conniff and Caravelli

Roberto Carlos is famous for his major concert tours, but none are more celebrated than his annual year-end special on the Brazilian television network Globo. This concert, usually broadcast on Christmas Eve, is a national tradition, drawing massive viewing figures every year. His major tours often sell out arenas, demonstrating the loyalty of his fan base. He also has a tradition of performing on cruise ships, known as the "Emoções em Alto Mar" (Emotions on the High Seas) project, which combines luxury travel with intimate performances for his most dedicated fans.

Now in his 80s, he continues to live in Rio de Janeiro, where he maintains a relatively private life when not touring. Despite his age, his musical output and performance schedule remain robust. He is recognized for his signature style—always dressed impeccably, usually in white or light blue, and famously tossing red roses to his adoring audience at the end of every show. He is a symbol of perennial romance and a pillar of Brazilian culture, whose voice remains as powerful and moving as ever.
